Why I Started Drinking Coconut Water Postpartum (And What It Actually Fixed)
Share
Somewhere in the middle of postpartum, I noticed something strange. I was drinking water constantly, more than I ever had in my life, and I still felt thirsty. Not just a little thirsty. The kind of thirsty that made me wonder if something was actually wrong with me.
It turns out, nothing was wrong. I just wasn't giving my body what it actually needed.
Water Isn't Always Enough
Plain water hydrates you, but it doesn't do the job alone. Your body doesn't just need water, it needs electrolytes, the minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium that actually help your body hold onto that water and use it well. Without them, you can drink glass after glass and still feel like you're running on empty. This is sometimes called structured water, water your cells can actually absorb and use, rather than water that just passes through.
Postpartum, your body is recovering, feeding another human in many cases, and losing fluids and electrolytes faster than you'd expect. Plain water simply couldn't keep up with what I needed. That constant thirst wasn't random. It was my body asking for something more.
What Actually Helped
Coconut water became my answer, almost by accident. It's naturally rich in potassium and electrolytes, without the added sugar and artificial ingredients you'll find in a lot of sports drinks and electrolyte mixes. It's about as close to what your body is actually asking for as you can get from something that still tastes good.
I started keeping it in the fridge the way I used to keep bottled water, and the difference was noticeable within days. The constant, nagging thirst finally started to ease.
A Few Ways I've Used It
I've played around with coconut water in a few simple ways beyond just drinking it straight. A few of my favorites:
- A simple electrolyte refresher: coconut water, a squeeze of fresh lime, and a small pinch of sea salt, stirred together over ice.
- A post-walk recovery drink: coconut water blended with a few raspberries, honey and a small handful of mint, easy to drink cold and refreshing after any kind of movement.
- A calming evening version: coconut water with a small piece of fresh ginger, which also happens to be gentle on digestion if your stomach's been off. I also added a little date syrup for added sweetness.
I've shared a few of these as quick videos if you want to see them made in real time. You can watch them on the links above.
If You're Always Thirsty Too
If you've been drinking water all day and still feel like it's never enough, you're not doing anything wrong, and you're probably not imagining it either. Your body might just be asking for more than water alone can give it. Something as simple as coconut water might be worth keeping in your fridge too.
